Seven

A chime woke Clay from a sound sleep. He opened his eyes to unfamiliar terrain. Not his yacht. Andrea’s bedroom. Last night flashed through his mind, and desire jolted his body like a lightning strike. For the first time in eight years he was right where he belonged. In Andrea’s bed.

He turned his head and found her flushed face on the pillow beside him. Rolling to his side, he snuggled closer to her warm body, palmed her breast, nuzzled her soft hair and inhaled her scent. No perfume. Just pure woman with a hint of her coconut shampoo. A smile stretched his lips.

She stiffened and cursed, wiping his smile away as quickly as it had appeared. After one panicked look over her shoulder at him, she jerked upright in the tangled sheets and then flung back the covers and bolted into the bathroom chanting, “Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh.”

He watched her adorable tush disappear around the door with unease prickling the back of his neck. “Everything okay?”

She reemerged, hastily tying her robe and wearing a strained look on her face that didn’t bode well for his morning appetite. “You’re here. I overslept. No, everything is not okay.”

The doorbell rang again—twice in rapid succession this time—and she winced. “Not good. Not good at all.”

She hustled out of the room and down the stairs. He heard the front door open and then hushed voices carried up the stairwell.

Clay sat up, raked his hands through his hair and swung his legs to the floor. It was a good thing he and Andrea had taken a quick shower at 3:00 a.m. after making love that last time, because it didn’t look like a leisurely shared bath would be on the agenda this morning. Even without the early morning visitor they had less than an hour to get to work.

Damn. He’d wanted to join her in that big whirlpool tub, lather every inch of her smooth skin and feel the jets swirling water around them while he buried himself deep inside her.

Next time.

He searched for his clothes and tugged them on. If he was lucky he could slip onto his yacht, shave and change without anyone at Dean noticing his wrinkled suit. He didn’t want to make Andrea the object of gossip and speculation again, but sooner or later Dean employees would find out they were back together. From her less than lusty reaction this morning he gathered she needed a little time to get used to the idea.

He opened the cabinet over the bathroom sink, took a swig of her mouthwash and mulled over his last night’s discovery. He’d fallen in love with Andrea again. Maybe he’d never stopped loving her. Whichever, he didn’t intend to let her go this time. All he had to do was convince her to move to Miami.

He borrowed her hairbrush and then headed down the stairs. Who had the balls to drop in on her this early in the morning? It damned well better not be Haynes.

The voices—one too high-pitched to be the race car driver—led him through the den and into the kitchen.
